Seeing that weve had a bunch of new likes recently, I figured Id share the story of these two kittens pictured. As a Veterinary Technician who not only interned but also worked at my local animal control for over a year, Ive seen some pretty sick things. The worst of all of it came to me on a weekend shift; where the techs just provide a clean cage, fresh water, and food to the animals. On September 21, 2014, I was power washing dog runs, as usual, when a volunteer stopped me. She said she found a box containing two kittens and one was most likely dead. I immediately ran outside and found said box. One kitten, the little calico, was screaming from hunger and cold. As for the orange kitten... he was lying perfectly still; no respiration movements, no meows even when his sister stepped on him while looking for food. He was gone.. so I thought. The little girl just needed food and a bath, which is what we did. She scarfed down her food and was well behaved during her bath, loving the warmth from the water since she and her brother had obviously been trapped in the rain. She had what appeared to be the start of an eye infection so we gave her the appropriate medication. I contacted my supervisor to ask what to do with what I thought was a dead kitten... I was told to place him in the freezer. Right as I placed this poor soul in a bag... he meowed in a way I cannot describe. It was and still is the most chilling sound Ive ever encountered. He was alive. He couldnt move, he couldnt even follow me with his eyes. He was is sad shape... but he was still fighting. I believe someone found these two, in the box, dumped somewhere. This someone then brought them to animal control... they didnt come in, they didnt even try. They just left these babies in their cardboard coffin, in hopes someone would find them. Thankfully, someone did. I called the on-call officer and had arranged for the orange kitten to be brought to the vet we used to be euthanized. Except... another volunteer stepped forward. This volunteer wrapped the little guy in a towel and she was crying like I have never seen. I told her I didnt think hed make it but if she wanted, we could try. She wanted to try anything I could think of to save this boy. And thats what we did. He received 3mls of SQ fluids, I force-fed him, with a syringe, only 1ml of kitten replacement milk since that was all his fragile body could handle. After that, he started to follow my finger in front of him. We didnt have any dry, warm towels so I grabbed a clean one and put it in the microwave. I wrapped that little boy up in the warm towel and he closed his eyes, in joy, for probably the first time in his life. The little girl in the first picture was named Xena, since she is a warrior. The little orange tabby that shouldve died... was brought to animal emergency. I named him Art, short for Arthur, which means strong as a rock. That he is! Both went off to different rescues and are doing amazing! If you come across kittens or a cat, call you local animal control. Regardless of the time, most have on-call officers. This shouldnt have happened but these two, thankfully, had a happy ending. =^.^= Kristin
