Seeing the Light: The Conservation of Porters Stained Glass Sunday, April 13, 5 p.m. At the San Francisco Swedenborgian Church, 2107 Lyon Street, corner of Washington A presentation by Ariana Makau of Nzilani Glass Conservation and Douglas Stinson, SFSC Council Member This talk will focus on the recent conservation of the original Bruce Porter stained glass windows in the Swedenborgian church sanctuary. Although relatively unknown today, Bruce Porter was a major figure in the Bohemian Cultural Renaissance of Fin de Siècle San Francisco. He was also a member of the informal Worcester Group, a collaborative circle of artists and architects centered around the first pastor of the San Francisco Swedenborgian church. We will discuss the delicate work done to preserve these pieces of art important to the Arts & Crafts movements in the Bay Area as well as Porters contribution to the architecture of this National Historic Landmark. Ariana Makau is the owner and principle conservator of Nzilani Glass Conservation LLC. Ms. Makau trained in the Antiquities Conservation Department at the J. Paul Getty Museum and received a Masters in Stained Glass Conservation at the Victoria & Albert Museum/ Royal College of Art, in London, England. A native Californian, Ariana founded Nzilani Glass Conservation, which specializes in glass conservation, restoration and commissioned works.
