Seems like Ive created even more controversy with my Tips for Modern Music Journalists article on Medium. If its not obvious, its just one mans opinion. I am not pretending to represent any sort of secret society here. The bottom line is there is nothing free in this world. So many music journalists are 100% beholden to PR people and record labels for ideation. Its a totally insane construct. Your job as a music journalist -- in my opinion -- is to find your own stories. Does anyone think my new 10,000-word piece on Sussan Deyhim had anything to do with someone pitching me something? No. Go find musicians that mean something to you. Youre not a promotional arm of the label or publicist. Youre not an extension of their agendas. Seriously, if youre a music journalist, please at least think about this. I know when youre beginning there is a certain razzle dazzle about being courted by people. It makes you feel important. It makes you feel like you have some sort of cachet or that youre influential. Take a step back. Think about what youre doing as something important. Think about it as contributing to the accumulation of cultural capital for people on a wider scale. Again, if youre being a music journalist for any other reason than to promote important music or ideas, exactly why are you doing it?
