Selfie photography thoughts Im really not an expert in selfies, - TopicsExpress

Selfie photography thoughts Im really not an expert in selfies, but I am an amateur photographer, and since Im seeing so many selfies on FB (and nothing wrong with that, by the way), I thought Id share some thoughts about technique. 1. DONT take a photo of yourself with a wide-angle lens. Unfortunately, it seems as if most hand-held devices (like phones and tablets) only have this BUT a wide-angle lens will distort your face, make your cheeks look fat and your nose big. Try zooming in a little and see if this makes a difference to your selfies. 2. Lighting is VERY important. Your eyes adjust superbly to ambient light levels, but your camera doesnt do nearly as good a job. Lighting from one side, like natural window light, will be better and more flattering than artificial light sources or light from above or below. And light shining directly on your face is best avoided unless you have good equipment and really know what you are doing. Also, try to avoid taking photos with light coming from different sources - like fluorescent bulbs, sunlight and regular electric bulbs simultaneously. It can confuse your cameras light meter and make you look garish, unless you have a really good camera. 3. The camera picks up details that your eyes do not. Any stray hairs, blemishes, marks, background mess or litter will show up. Check your yourself in a mirror first and then also check the background that will appear in your photo carefully. 4. What you are wearing, the photo background, where you are, your facial expression, and so on, convey a lot of non-verbal information about you, and influence the way the viewer will perceive you - remember the old adage: a picture is worth a thousand words. So think about what you are wanting to say with your photograph. Maybe you are showing off for someone special, sharing a happy moment, putting up an updated for family and friends that you havent seen for a long time. Mostly, though, selfies are about bragging and selling yourself, right? You want people to ogle you, and admire your body and appearance (come on, be honest now - why do you think you see so many nearly-naked selfies all over the internet?) ALL photos communicate meaning - whether it is fun, happiness, loneliness, sadness, vanity, bragging, etc. You will be judged by what you communicate - this is human nature.
