Sen Sgt Mal Unicomb - 40 years of Policing ! Today we acknowledge one of our longest serving & most dedicated Highway Patrol Officers, Sen Sgt Mal Unicomb, Cluster Senior Supervisor of the Western Region. Insp Jeff Boon, Traffic Tactician for the Western Region acknowledged Sen Sgt Unicombs contribution by holding a morning tea in Dubbo at 10:30am this morning & telling those present; S/Sgt Mal Unicomb left the Redfern Police Academy on 11/8/1974 and after one year entered joined the Traffic Branch as an inner city cyclist. From that point onwards it was a career that prospered in the HWP. It is hard to imagine how may lives have been saved because of Mals service to the community. He is currently stationed a Coonabarabran where he has direct line Command of the largest Cluster in the Western Region. He is literally responsible for about one third of NSW. He has now been joined by his son Aaron at Coona, who will no doubt keep the name alive forever. It is a huge privilege to work with a true legend of the Highway Patrol and a god in the Western Region. Mal is like a walking encyclopedia of information about the Region and its people. Police work, in particular Highway Patrol work, can take a toll on those that undertake this career, to see Mal prosper in this harsh environment is a testament to the strength of character of the Senior Sergeant. Of particular note is that Mal still gets out there; only in the last few weeks he has arrested a motorist for drink driving and issued notices for speeding. At a time when many may choose to do other things, Mal is still doing his duty on the front line. Mal has received 2 Commissioners Commendations for bravery as well as a series of long and diligent service awards. Please join us in acknowledging this most significant achievement not only to policing, but to road safety throughout NSW.
