Senate Passes Cloture Vote, Moving Forward Immigration Reform - TopicsExpress

Senate Passes Cloture Vote, Moving Forward Immigration Reform Bill Yesterday, the Senate voted 67-27 to advance the latest version of S. 744, the “Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act.†While this vote moves immigration closer to final passage, it takes a very high toll on our communities and our country’s economy. The Corker-Hoeven Compromise (latest version of S. 744), among other things, would require hundreds of miles of border walls be added to the existing 651 miles and double the size of the U.S. border patrol by adding 20,000 agents – costing the U.S. government $30 billion dollars. This compromise is bad public policy. It is extremely excessive and expensive. Last year alone the U.S. spent $18 billion on immigration enforcement – more than all other federal law enforcement combined. We already have a “border surge†and we certainly do not need another one. Enclosed please find a letter on behalf of the Hispanic Federation and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF) expressing serious concerns with the Corker-Hoeven Compromise. The letter urges all U.S. Senators to address concerns before final passage. Today the Senate continues to negotiate whether a consent agreement can be reached to permit votes on additional amendments to S. 744. HF remains hopeful that Senate leaders will adopt positive amendments and will refuse to further negotiate on amendments that hurt immigrants and their families. The Senate is largely expected to vote on the Corker-Hoeven Compromise tomorrow morning and proceed with a vote on final passage on Friday. Although, if a consent agreement is reached the vote for final passage could happen as early as Thursday evening. As part of our continuing support, HF will continue to provide updates on developments as they arise.
