Sensible Salt Intake: Salt has become an integral part of our diet. Sodium chloride, better known as table salt, is added to food during and after cooking. It is also added to processed food for its preservative and flavouring quality. Sodium chloride (salt), made up of the minerals sodium and chloride, is important in maintaining healthy body functions and regulating the body’s water balance. Every cell in the body is bathed in a salty fluid – the more salt in that fluid, the more water the body needs to dilute it to maintain a balanced sodium concentration. Sodium and chloride also work with potassium to regulate the balance of body fluids. Imbalances lead to a disruption in metabolic function. Sodium is also crucial to healthy nerve and proper muscle function. Making sure we get enough salt is not a problem. In fact, most of us consume too much. Excessive salt intake may increase blood pressure. In people who are salt sensitive, blood pressure increases as the volume of fluid in the blood increases. Salt exacerbates water retention because the body absorbs more water to dilute the salt. ow.ly/wgTKa
