Sentro Kalinga celebrates special kids’ week with fun activities Sentro Kalinga, a Special Education (SPED) center funded by the local government of Taguig celebrated its first-ever “Caring for the Exceptional Children Consciousness Week” with week-long activities to enhance personal relationships of special children with their parents. The activities, which started last September 30, kicked off with a day of fun and games for students and parents held at the ASCOM Football field, Fort Bonifacio, Taguig. The next day, the students were treated to an “Art Day” where participants enjoyed hand painting, coloring, clay making and guided drawing. Today, Sentro Kalinga sponsored what it described as an “interactive” and "wholistic approach" seminar for their students and parents, tackling topics such as “Food as Medicine” and “NEW START,” which stands for “Nutrition, Exercise, Water, Sunlight, Temperance, Air, Rest and Trust.” They also encouraged the participants to join the Tai Chi exercise while the children were taught food preparation. They also offered acupuncture therapy for city hall employees as the event was being held at the City Hall auditorium. According to Sentro Kalinga head Mutya Cayabyab, the activities were not only envisioned for the enjoyment of children and parents, but also to enhance hands-on caring and to have a physical and personal input in the rearing of children with special cases. Today’s events will be capped by an awarding ceremony, costume parade, mother and child pageant and masquerade ball at the TCU auditorium. This is to also highlight the celebration of the United Nations and Teachers’ Day for the month of October. Sentro Kalinga started in 2005 to cater for basic education or early intervention among special children and as time passes, they integrated transition, trans-academic and pre-vocational education for older children with special cases. It now caters to 120 students, around 20 of whom, while still being guided and monitored by the center, are attending regular school. Sentro Kalinga also offers free counseling for parents and other family members so they will know how to deal with their children’s behavior. The SPED center attends to children with cases of autism, cerebral palsy, dawn syndrome, ADHD and for the hearing and visual impaired. ###
