Separatism, specially political in nature is quite common phenomenon world over. There is hardly any nation in this world that is not having some or the other group, region, culture, ethnicity, etc, not seeking, demanding and wishing to be autonomous and separate. Some are seeking total break-away while others are ok with a loose relation with parent country. UN has begun to recognise such separatist demands, organizations. Though due to the fragile and delicate relations that it has with parent countries most of it is not officially acknowledged. Hence no official figure is available, but seems at least 3000 such regions are there world over. India has approx. 13 such regions / organizations. They may have one or more motivations for separation, including:[8] 1.) Emotional resentment and hatred of rival communities. 2.) Protection from ethnic cleansing and genocide. 3.) Resistance by victims of oppression, including denigration of their language, culture or religion. 4.) Propaganda by those who hope to gain politically from intergroup conflict and hatred. 5.) Economic and political dominance of one group that does not share power and privilege in an egalitarian fashion. 6.) Detaching from generally accepted stereotypes and sacrificing more time to create happiness mote sustainability than the current flow of things. 7.) Economic motivations: seeking to end economic exploitation by more powerful group or, conversely, to escape economic redistribution from a richer to a poorer group. 8.) Preservation of threatened religious, language or other cultural tradition. 9.) Destabilization from one separatist movement giving rise to others. 10.) Geopolitical power vacuum from breakup of larger states or empires. 11.) Continuing fragmentation as more and more states break up. 12.) Feeling that the perceived nation was added to the larger state by illegitimate means. 13.) The perception that the state can no longer support ones own group or has betrayed their interests. 14.) Opposition to political decisions. 15.) Wish to have a more practical political structure and not rely on people who are located far away to govern them or otherwise impractical solutions.
