Sepsis Awareness Month is right around the corner! #Sepsis is a deadly condition resulting from inflammation throughout your body due to an infection. It can occur with ANY infection, including something as simple as strep throat or a bladder infection. I have had it 3 times in my life, and each time, qualified doctors missed the diagnosis repeatedly until I became dangerously ill. With someone in the U.S. dying of sepsis about every 2 minutes, you cant afford to ignore the signs and symptoms of this condition. If you experience any TWO of the following symptoms and you think you might have an infection, make an urgent appointment with your doctor or go to the emergency room. Signs and Symptoms: -Temperature higher than 100.4°F or lower than 96.8°F. -Heart rate faster than 90 beats per minute. -Breathing rate faster than 20 breaths per minute. -White blood cell count higher than 12,000 or lower than 4,000 cells per mL of blood. Its also important to make sure that you speak up and voice your concerns to your doctor if youre concerned about sepsis. Sometimes, doctors only have one picture in their head of what severe infection should look like, and that can result in them missing this very dangerous condition. Because I wasnt running a fever and had a low white blood cell count, my sepsis was missed repeatedly by emergency room physicians until I ended up hospitalized for weeks of IV antibiotics and in need of surgery.
