Sept. 11: Fundraising Gala for Ukraine with Stephen Harper as Guest Speaker Special Event - September 11, 2014On Thursday, September 11, 2014, the Canada Ukraine Foundation (CUF) is holding a Fundraising Gala “United for Ukraine” at the Toronto Congress Centre, 650 Dixon Road, Etobicoke, to help raise funds for Ukraine’s humanitarian needs at this trying time. Our keynote speaker for the evening will be the Right Honourable Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada. Ukraine has confronted many challenges since student protests started in Kyiv’s Independence Square on November 21, 2013. Families across Ukraine are dealing not only with the loss of their loved one, but in many cases, the financial impact of the death of the family breadwinner. Western media is also reporting over 139,000 internally displaced persons from Crimea and Eastern Ukraine. This fall, CUF is sending a team of medical professionals from Canada to Kyiv, Ukraine in partnership with Operation Rainbow, a Canadian organization. The medical team will perform post-traumatic and acute trauma surgeries on those injured while fighting on the front lines, as well as on innocent civilians caught in the cross-fire. The estimated cost of this mission will be $200,000 and our objective is to raise the needed funds in one evening. This gala is also the start of a national campaign to raise $2 million for the Ukraine Rebuilding Fund, which will support the rebuilding of the social infrastructure destroyed in the eastern regions of Ukraine.
