Sept 22- Dan 6 Today is the story of Daniel in the lion’s den. This very well-known biblical story has Daniel thrown into a lion’s den after being falsely by set up by jealous satraps and other governing men in Darius government. Daniel survives the night in the den. Darius has the accusers and their families into the den and they are killed. 25 Then King Darius wrote to all the nations and peoples of every language in all the earth: “May you prosper greatly! 26 “I issue a decree that in every part of my kingdom people must fear and reverence the God of Daniel. “For he is the living God and he endures forever; his kingdom will not be destroyed, his dominion will never end.27 He rescues and he saves; he performs signs and wonders in the heavens and on the earth. He has rescued Daniel from the power of the lions.” 28 So Daniel prospered during the reign of Darius and the reign of Cyrus the Persian. How old was Daniel when this happened? The Book of Daniel says that Daniel was captured in the 3rd year of the reign of Jehoiakim. On this evidence, Daniel must have been in captivity 70 years by the time the Persians defeated the Babylonians. Daniel would probably have been in his late seventies or early eighties by the time the Book says that he was thrown in the lions den. However, the Book of Daniel says that the Persian king, who defeated the Babylonians and later attempted to sacrifice Daniel to the lions, was Darius. But historians say that Cyrus was the Persian king who defeated the Babylonians, and that Darius was a successor. If the author really intended to place this event during the actual reign of Darius, then Daniel would have been at least ninety and possibly more than 100 years old at the time.
