September 15, 1814. Gordons flotilla having escaped the Potomac - TopicsExpress

September 15, 1814. Gordons flotilla having escaped the Potomac defenders, he raced to join the attack on Baltimore, and ended up leading it, his frigate Seahorse in the van. To Gordons horror, they were sailing into a mighty trap. Mauled by the well-prepared Americans, all was lost. Glory, honor, prize money--gone. Even the famed rocket ship, Erebus, had been driven out of action by the fierce American gunnery---but not before supplying colorful inspiration for our Anthem. British General Ross, victor of Bladensburg, is dead, and Admiral Cochrane mortified. Baltimore is delirious. A new song is born, celebrating the miracle: Militia, volunteers, army, navy, marines, free, slave, master, servant, workingman, woman, cook, stevedore, black, red, white, yellow, brown, all became one. Together, they defeated the greatest army and navy in the world. Liberty! And America was re-born. As the British slipped back down the Bay, down also went the hopes of the greedy British-- more repudiation for their haughty ruling class. America has won! Freedom is forever ours. Happy Star-Spangled Banner Day!
