September 17, 2014 Where to start? Well, this is certainly not Thursday. Our CCN nurse, Lee, was nudging the doc saying today was ok and they needed a bed if Abbey could go home, why wait until tomorrow. Her vaccinations all went fine, overnight her feedings with mom there turned out to be all over her requirement, so things were looking great! Doc agreed. There was also a little nudge from me to the nurse because if she was successful getting the doc to agree, what a wonderful anniversary present it would be for Cheryl and I, engaged four years ago on this date! Had to wait, and wait, and wait for the lab to come up and do one final check of her hemocrit, to make sure it had not gone down again - and it has started up which is what they wanted to see! After that, it was pretty much galloping horses by everyone there to help us finish the packing and vacate - did they need a room, sure, but they really knew it was our turn and they wanted to see us out to be happy. Double edge sword of course, because some of the nurses there have become quite fond of us, and yes, Abbey too! Home, the ride was Cheryl in the backseat to watch Abbey as required. My car is still at the hospital but it will find its way home eventually. No winner on the cookie guess-the-day, so Cheryl and I had one as our last hospital cookie! Zoey, as you can see from pictures, is quite curious about this new creature in the house - the movements, the little noises. Wait until theres a full on scream out of that little creature! Zoey is acting timid but also testing a little, so its watch and see how that goes. One of the things that many people think about a premie going home is that home means all is good and just like any normal baby coming home. It isnt. We still feed her every three hours around the clock to ensure growth and thriving, until the pediatrician says otherwise. We avoid public places, in fact, the recommendation is no grocery stores, churches, etc. for a year. A premie is a premie until their second birthday and the risks are known and safeguards seem well documented. Some of it may be hard, and we have not yet read all of the discharge papers. Abigail is home. A long, long run to get here. Incredible support from so man family, friends, and people we dont know at all! Thank you. Its humbling. Im sure that there will still be some updates about Abbey, but as we start to settle in now, our focus is more than ever that little bundle of joy making little squeaking noises in her crib. Its amazing to have her home, and yet, just the beginning of the next part of this wonderful journey. Will be nice when the day comes that the premature delivery and hospital stay are just a blip on the radar of time, but definitely not going to look for any of what is coming for our new family to rush by at all. Time to enjoy!
