September 17 In the 16th chapter of Matthew, Jesus asks His disciples about the different opinions circulating around about who He is. There was a lot of buzz going around in the land of Israel about the earthly ministry of Christ, primarily because of His healing ministry. There were a lot of people who said, “No man could do these things unless God be in him.” So Jesus asked His disciples, “Who do men say that I am?” They gave Him all kinds of answers that there were those who thought He was the incarnation of one of the prophets. Others thought that He might even be John the Baptist risen from the dead. But then Jesus said, “Who do you say I am?” Peter’s answer was, “You are the Christ the Son of the living God.” Then Jesus went on to explain that Peter’s confession was not the result of being revealed by flesh and blood, but the source of his faith and confession came from the Holy Spirit. The passage in the New Testament translated in the King James, “No one can say that Jesus is Lord but by the Holy Spirit,” really could be translated, “No one can confess that Jesus is Lord, but by the Holy Spirit.” It is the Holy Spirit through word and sacrament that creates saving faith in the hearts and minds of people. Prayer: Lord, continue to lead me and direct me by Your word and continue to nourish me spiritually and keep me strong in faith.
