September 19, 2013 – Standing Still: The typical American household enjoys a standard of living no higher today than its counterpart 25 years ago, and the level of poverty is about the same as well. There were significant improvements in the 1990s, but they were wiped out in the most recent recession. At the same time, the costs of maintaining a middle-class lifestyle have increased, while the gap between the rich and other Americans has widened.
