September 21, 1975 ... Atop the Hot 100, its David Bowie, with Fame. Written by Bowie, inspired by a Carlos Alomar guitar riff, and titled by John Lennon, Fame appears on Bowies Young Americans album. It was recorded at Electric Lady studios in Greenwich Village. Lennon appears on the track, singing the repeating lyric FAME, FAME, FAME at various speeds. Fame became Bowies first #1 hit, much to his surprise. Bowie would later claim that he had absolutely no idea that the song would do so well as a single, saying I wouldnt know how to pick a single if it hit me in the face. Todays song clip is from Bowies January 1976 appearance on Soul Train, a rare appearance by a white artist on the long-running R&B dance party.
