September 24, 2014 For immediate release: Bayonne Bridge Update Mayor Jimmy Davis announced that the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has advised the City of Bayonne of various developments in the Bayonne Bridge constructions project. Construction continues on the mechanical building at 6th Street and Avenue A. Construction has been completed on the mechanically stabilized earth wall that runs from 6th Street to Margaret Street. Assembly has started on the gantry, and will advance with the 330-ton crane that arrived on September 16. The crane will start constructing the new piers in early November. The gantry carries the pre-cast roadway slabs to the new piers. The piers are the columns that support the approaches to the bridge. The crane height will start at 120 feet and then grow to 300 feet once it gets closer to the Kill Van Kull. The gantry base is at 6th Street and travels the entire length of the bridge. Sometime this fall, another crane will be in service working on the southern end of Bayonne near 1st Street. Verizon and Cablevision are installing new cables inside street vaults. This activity will require a curb closure. A utility truck will be involved and off-duty police officers will assist. The following streets will be involved: 1st Street, Gertrude Street, 3rd Street, Juliette Street, and 4th Street. Work started on 4th Street. A new sewer and storm system has been completed on 5th Street. Water testing has been completed by United Water. Tests showed clean water. Residents will be connected to the new water line soon.
