September 29, 2013 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time Lord, help me to see each day as a gift and an opportunity to generously share the spiritual and material blessings You have bestowed upon me. Grant that I may never be too absorbed in my own comfort and possessions that I become blinded to the needs of others. Help me to guard against gross self-indulgence which our culture readily promotes. Guide me to take deliberate steps against the influence of the world by dying to my complacent flesh and by focusing on the “Lazaruses” in my life, the needy, the downtrodden, the sick, the lonely, and the oppressed. May they find comfort in You through the open hearts and hands of generous persons. May I keep in mind that in Your economy, those who hold on possessively to what they have, lose it all in the end, while those who share generously receive back so much more that what they had given away. Shake me out of my indifference, feigned ignorance and hardness of heart and make me more aware of the fact that my action or inaction will truly determine my eternity.
