September 5, 2014 “D.I.Y. Disaster!” Some of the most popular shows on television are reality shows. My favorite among that genre are the DIY or “Do It Yourself” shows. These shows are instructional in nature and they encourage homeowners to save time and money by doing any house repairs yourself. But, the problem is, most of the viewers have absolutely zero skills to do their own complicated building or repair projects. Their projects look simple to do on a 30 minute time-lapsed show, but more often than not, the projects turn out to be disasters costing more money and headaches! It is the same way when people try to design their own brand of Christianity and try to gain salvation by doing their own works. They try to approach God on their own terms. They lean on their own righteousness, instead of trusting Christ and the imputed righteousness He has provided. I am reminded of the Genesis account of Cain and Abel, the sons of Adam and Eve. Abel brought an animal for a “blood sacrifice” as God had prescribed, but Cain decided to bring a sacrifice of his own choosing which was produce grown in the earth. God accepted Abel’s offering and rejected Cain’s because it was not what God asked to receive. The Bible, God’s Word, tells us how to gain salvation by placing our faith and trust in Jesus’ finished work on the cross. But many feel that they must add something to God’s grace or subtract something that does not sit well with them. God really makes it simple… so simple that a child can understand and receive salvation. Don’t believe Satan’s attempt to make you think you can make it on your own merit. Don’t be a church member who sings Frank Sinatra’s favorite song, “I Did It My Way!” Don’t do it yourself… because Christ has already done it all!! Michael Gordon
