September 8 - Save the date – because it’s National Date-Nut Bread Day! Dates are one of the worlds oldest fruits. Date seeds have been found in archaeology excavations of sub-tropical areas around the world. Historians believe that the ancient Moors brought the date to Spain and later introduced it to America. Date-nut bread is one of those fantastic retro delights that will never get old. Recipes for this charming snack began appearing in cookbooks in the 1920s, although cultures have been mixing nuts and fruit into their dough for centuries. The crunch of a sturdy nut, like walnuts, pairs well with the sweet, rich flavor of dates in this moist, dense cake-like bread. In the 1930s, it became a favorite base for tea sandwiches. Ah, theres nothing quite like chowing down on a dainty sandwich of date-nut bread with cream cheese or butter in between! You can whip up your own tea sandwiches and slice them into triangles or fingers for your afternoon gathering, or just bake up some bread for your snacking/breakfasting pleasure. Dates are notorious for their high sugar content, so it is no surprise that most date nut bread recipes do not call for any additional sweeteners. To celebrate National Date Nut Bread Day, try your hand at baking a homemade loaf of this festive treat! Dont forget to top it off with a little cream cheese frosting!
