Serendipity, Happenstance… basically, a happy event that occurs by pure chance. This is what took place at the Central Division club yesterday afternoon. A week ago, my mum casually mentioned that Leo Kenny was at the club on Sunday afternoon. Val and I decided to go, and invited Tony and Shirley, Mary Daly, and my Bulgarian friend Emile. Without us knowing, Shirley invited Harry and Flora, some friends we had initially met in Spain 10 years ago. She also let Leo;s wife Wendy know we were all going. Wendy’s famous hypnotist brother J.J. Barry decided to come, and along with my dad, we had a support group of 12. Rentacrowd at its best. Harry and Flora had never seen Leo before, or met Wendy, or Emile, however everyone jelled marvellously. Like most clubs, over the past 10 years, the audienc es have dwindled so our little inebriated group added greatly to the atmosphere. Prior to Leo doing his first spot, they played 4 games of bingo. Wendy won 3 of them. She is banned from ever coming with us again. Leo was chuffed, said it saved him from having to buy her a Christmas present…and maybe she would treat him to a meal on the way home. She corrected this to a take-away. Their 11 year old granddaughter was amused by the whole event. Now, with everyone familiar with each other, Leo began to sing. As good as ever, and with his usual selection of mixed Motown and Philly, he had the audience hooked. In no time at all, |Shirley had me up dancing. That started the ball rolling. Next I was dancing with Val, Wendy, and Flora, and even Mary. I hadn’t had the chance to dance with them for several months, it was a good feeling. As the afternoon moved on, Leo kept up his usual blitz of old and new songs that had the club joining in like it used to. They pressed him to do several encores, and insisted that he returns in the near future. Serendipity at its finest. We all agreed that it had been the best Sunday afternoon in years, and agreed to do it again before too long. Thanks Leo for everything.
