Serious disease found in Newington mosquitoes Wednesday, September 4, 2013 NEWINGTON — The state has discovered Eastern Equine Encephalitis (also known as Triple E) in Newington. It was recently detected in Exeter as well. Triple E is a rare but very serious disease transmitted though the bite of a mosquito. Newington Selectmen urge all residents to stay indoors whenever possible or to wear long pants and long sleeves if they do venture outside during peak mosquito hours from dusk to dawn. Please make sure to use mosquito repellant anytime you are outdoors such as waiting for the bus, walking to school or during outdoor sports practice. Mosquito netting should be used on baby carriages or playpens when babies are outdoors. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water so clear any standing water from around your home. Turn over unused wading pools or flower pots and change the water in bird baths and pet bowls frequently. Repair holes in screen doors. Feel free to contact the Town Health Officer John Stowell at 603-436-7640 if you would like further information. In late August, the New Hampshire Health Department found a batch of mosquitoes in Exeter has tested positive for Triple E, the first finding of the virus in the state this year. In 2012, there were 13 positive tests for EEE, including nine mosquito batches and four animals. Symptoms may include high fever, severe headache, stiff neck, and sore throat. There is no treatment for the disease, which can lead to seizures and coma. The health department says symptoms usually occur four to 10 days after being bitten. Six batches of another mosquito-related disease, the West Nile Virus, have tested positive so far this season. Also in late August, Triple E mosquitoes were found in York, Maine, according to the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The positive test came from a mosquito pool from the town of York. That was the second mosquito pool from Maine to test positive for EEE in 2013. Regionally, all of the surrounding states have also identified Triple E in 2013 including mosquito pools in Vermont, and Massachusetts. Two horses have tested positive for Triple E in Massachusetts.
