Worldly Experience can Create barriers that Block Belief A. Some religious experiences can block belief : John 3:1a There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus B. Some worldly experiences can block belief: 1. Attraction to worldly pleasure can block belief: I John 2:15a Love not the world, 2. Attraction to material things can block belief: 1 John 2:15b, Neither the things that are in the world. II. Worldly Knowledge Can Block Belief: John 3:10, , You are Israels teacher , said Jesus, and you do not understand these things? A. Worldly knowledge can cause distrust: 1. Worldly knowledge says: If it doesnt make sense, dont trust it. John 3:8, The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear the sound but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit. 2. Worldly advice: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. I Corinthians 2:9, No eye has seen, nor ear heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him. B. Academic knowledge can block belief 1. The theory of evolution can block the facts about creation. Gen 1:1 2. Rational logic can replace faith. John 3:4 How can a man be born when he is old? Nicodemus asked Jesus. III. Godly solutions that Remove Barriers to belief: John 3:9, John 3:9 How can these things be? Nicodemus asked. A. Believing what the Bible teaches about Jesus removes that barrier of belief: John 3:15, that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. 1. Believing that he died on the cross removes barriers to belief: John 3:14, Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up. 2. Believing that he rose from the grave removes barriers of belief: 1 Corinthians 15:4, that he was raised on the third day according to the scriptures. B. Acceptance of salvation removed all barriers to belief. 1. Salvation is a change of heart. Romans 10:10, For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified. 2. Salvation is a change of mind. Romans 12:12, Do not be conformed any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transeformed by the renewing of your mind. 3. Salvation is revealed by a change of behavior. Romans 10:9 If you confess with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
