Service Group Departs July 28 to Help Taiwanese Businesses in Eastern China A Taiwanese Business Service Group, organized by the Economic Ministry’s Joint Taiwanese Business Service Center and led by Director General Chiu Yi-cheh of the Department of Investment Services, departed on July 28 to provide assistance to businesses in Yangzhou, Suzhou, and other areas in eastern China with concentrations of Taiwanese investment. (The previous such group visited Zhaoqing, Zhongshan, and Shenzhen in May.) The group is calling on Taiwanese-invested businesses there and offering corporate diagnostic and in-depth counseling services, and is holding two Taiwanese business seminars designed to build bridges that will strengthen two-way cooperation by boosting communication and exchange between the Taiwanese businesses in China and institutions and financial organizations in Taiwan. The purpose of the group is to provide professional integrated services that will help Taiwanese businesses resolve the problems they face and upgrade their competitiveness. The Yangzhou and Suzhou areas are major bases for Taiwanese investment in China, where the invested enterprises are engaged mainly in such high-tech industries as computers and electronic products, electronics parts, optoelectronics, and communications system products. In recent years, however, there has been a gradual shift toward services and emerging industries. The current service group hopes not only to help Taiwanese businesses in such areas as upgrading and transition, marketing, and funding by providing relevant counseling services, but also to carry out explanations on cross-strait investment obstacles, which are of intense concern to Taiwanese businesses, and encourage those businesses to make use of Taiwan’s advantages by using the island as their base for high-value-added production, innovation, and R&D. The service group includes representatives from the China Productivity Center, Industrial Technology Research Institute, Commerce Development Research Institution, and Taiwan External Trade Development Council, who are providing help with upgrading and transition. It also has representatives from the Taiwan Stock Exchange Corp., GreTai Securities Market, Hua Nan Bank, Mega International Commercial Bank, Cathay United Bank, Chinatrust Commercial Bank, who are using face-to-face talks to provide Taiwanese businesses with assistance they need for cross-strait deployment. Besides holding seminars, the group is visiting Taiwan business associations and Taiwanese-invested enterprises to exchange ideas on the challenges that the businesses face in their China operations, and to arrange in-depth counseling by participating professionals on such issues as production management and marketing. The Joint Taiwanese Business Service Center will continue working with other government agencies and institutions to provide overseas Taiwanese businesses with the help needed to overcome the obstacles they encounter in their offshore investment and strengthen their competitive advantages.
