Setting limits for your child is an important job…albeit, not an easy one. However, giving children clear rules and boundaries is healthy for the entire family. Furthermore, when consistently and lovingly enforced, limits can help your child develop self-control, stay safe and reinforce your family’s values. When setting limits, parents should think about your child’s developmental level, emotional and cognitive abilities. This might mean that children in your family will have different limits and expectations, even if they are close in age. Next, remember, young people will probably test the limits that parents establish. Are your read to “stick to your guns”? This might involve enforcing boundaries through both positive reinforcement and discipline, as well as explaining the reasons for the limits you set. Being consistent is important in helping your child understand family limits. Without consistency, it is difficult to make limits a part of your child’s pattern of behavior.
