Settling In Chronicles, Chapter Three: after months of staring - TopicsExpress

Settling In Chronicles, Chapter Three: after months of staring down at the 9/11 Memorial from my dining room window, I walked through the garden for the first time in the slanting, late afternoon light. Two immense pools, faced in gray granite, are set within the footprints of the Twin Towers, surrounded by rows and rows of white oaks with broad, leafy canopies. Each pool is edged by gossamer-thin waterfalls, cascading, water and reflected light spilling down into infinite darkness. As I walked, I traced each victims name, simply etched into bronze, some with yellow roses, others with American flags. I know that there were many controversies surrounding the memorial but, for me, today, it felt perfect -- holding both gravitas and light, somber contemplation and hope. Taking immense tragedy and creating serenity and beauty within its footprints seems to me to be the ultimate tribute.
