Seven Days of Tony Kakko! Day 6: To make up for missing a day, Im going two Sonata Arctica songs. I tend to like long songs with stories. For example: my two favourite songs of all time are Judas Priests criminally under-appreciated Cathedral Spires and Blind Guardians And Then There Was Silence. The first of those barely manages to avoid breaking 10 minutes, the second goes past 14. Both are not only musically great, but also lyrically, combining stunning composition with fantastic lyrics that also represent some of the best world-building that exists. I bring these examples up because long songs, great lyrics, and world-building are all things that Sonata Arctica happens to do exceedingly well. Case in point: The Wildfire series from their albums Reckoning Night and Stones Grow Her Name. The songs tell the story of a village with a... fickle relationship with a certain family. One that eventually ends in... Wildfire. Through 3 songs (all admittedly a bit long), the family is characterized, as is the village, as is the nearby mountain. Meanwhile, the story is absolutely enthralling, spanning at least two generations while constantly keeping the pace of a good action movie. Musically, the songs are fantastic as well. Whatever the band is doing works: the opening to part 2 is absolutely haunting. I still get goosebumps every time I hear it. The ending to the third song produces the same effect. Which is good, because part 2 isnt actually on YouTube. So here are parts one and three. https://youtube/watch?v=n5Da54cna-U https://youtube/watch?v=JgDtfDDu41Q
