Seven years in a Thai jail for quoting a Reuters article. Thats the prospect facing Australian journalist Alan Morison, editor of Phuketwan, and the web sites news reporter Chutima Sidasathian. Both face court today in a criminal defamation action launched by a captain in the Royal Thai Navy. Phuketwan quoted a single paragraph from the Reuters story. Reuters, and other Thai news sites that quoted the global news agencys story, have not been charged. This week that story, exposing the violent persecution of Myanmars Rohingya minority, won a Pulitzer Prizer for Reuters. The two journalists may be held in custody tonight because they intend to refuse to lodge bail.
