Seventeen years ago right now I was one of the few people that knew the news that was going to hit the next morning. Seventeen years ago today I sat down and gave an exclusive, embargoed interview to the New York Times. I had no idea, at the time, how big of a story my lawsuit would be ... that for 7 years I would do multiple interviews each and every week - including a one hour special with dateline, interviews with 60 minutes, the today show, good morning america, CBS morning news, People, Time, Newsweek, US News, Glamour, LA Times, WashPo and every major US and multiple international media outlets. I had no idea that following my lawsuit I would not only work on, but start and lead a ballot initiative - a constitutional amendment in Michigan. 17 years ago, frankly, I hated politics. Seventeen years ago right now, I had no idea how much my life would change in just a few hours. Seventeen years - and in some states, kids that are just 17 years old today would still be judged based on their skin color by their government. Sad. Which is why Id do it all over again, right now, which is why I continue to speak up and stand up for equal treatment for every individual, regardless of race, by our government.
