Seventy years ago today, brave American and Allied forces dropped into enemy-occupied territory and stormed the beaches of Normandy in a heroic effort to turn the tide of war and drive the Nazi forces back. So many young Americans – members of the Greatest Generation – put the good of the nation first, and in deed the fate of the world, as they gave so much of themselves to fight the forces of tyranny that threatened the values we hold dear. With steady resolve in the face of difficult conditions these men would not be turned back; they would not be defeated. With great courage and selflessness, Allied troops marched to a victory that was critical to the outcome of the war. Today we honor their service and their sacrifice. We remember those who gave their lives on the battlefield, ‘the last full measure of devotion,’ and we thank all those who charged into harm’s way for the noble cause of freedom.
