Several hundreds of pro-Palestinian protesters have busted a pro-Israeli press conference by members of the New York City Council, Press TV reports. The New York City Council and various other local and state politicians organized a press conference called New York Stands with Israel on Monday to declare their support for the regime in Tel Aviv. Outside the City Hall, the peace activists gathered to denounce the City Council for expressing support for Israel and to condemn Tel Aviv’s crimes in the Gaza Strip. As the press conference went on, the words of the pro-Israeli US officials were nearly drowned out by hundreds of people screaming in support of Palestine. The crowd waved the Palestinian flag and chanted slogans in support of the Palestinian people’s act struggle of resistance. “Free Free Gaza, Free Free Palestine,” many were shouting. One of the protesters noted she is degusted with the city council members, saying “Disgrace. When they’re closing schools and say there is no money for any kind of improvement in our lives and our children’s lives they are supporting the bombing, the genocide of people, that’s repugnant.” Another protester said, “We are here to be the voices of millions that are locked in an open air prison, and we’re here because they don’t have a voice but we have. We have the right to protest and they don’t.” Gaza has been blockaded since 2007. The Israeli regime denies 1.7 million residents in Gaza their basic rights, such as freedom of movement, jobs that pay proper wages, and adequate healthcare and education. The Press TV team managed to enter the City Hall but the City Council members refused to answer questions about Israeli atrocities in the Gaza Strip. Over 180 Palestinians have been killed and hundreds wounded, including women and children, by the Israeli offensive against the besieged territory. In response to the attack, Palestinian resistance fighters fired rockets into Israeli cities. No Israelis have died by the rocket fire. In a statement issued on Saturday, the UN Security Council unanimously called for ceasefire and respect for international humanitarian laws, voicing serious concern over the protection and welfare of civilians during Israeli airstrikes in Gaza. The Israeli military frequently attacks the Gaza Strip, saying the actions are being conducted for defensive purposes. However, disproportionate force is always used, in violation of international law, and civilians are often killed or injured.
