Severe Weather Update A strong moist northwest flow covering the country is expected to remain until the weekend. Rain is expected to persist about the South Island West Coast from today (Thursday) through to Saturday,spreading over the lower North Island and upper South Island during the weekend. Strong to gale northwesterlies continue about eastern parts of the South Island and lower North Island, becoming stronger and more widespread from late Friday as a front moves north over the South Island. A heavy rain warning is now in force for Fiordland, Westland south of Otira, the Canterbury and Otago Headwaters, and Mt Taranaki from Friday evening. A Warning for severe gales is in force for Southland, Otago and Canterbury. Heavy rain is expected at times about Fiordland and Westland from today until Friday evening, with some spill-over expected into the Canterbury and Otago Headwaters and a Watch will be maintained for these areas. In addition, rain is expected to become heavier about the Tararua Range from Friday evening, extending through until Sunday; a Watch for significant rainfall accumulations during this time has been issued. Northwesterlies are expected to strengthen over the upper South Island and lower North Island from Friday evening through to late Saturday, possibly even into Sunday. A watch for the possibility of severe gale gusts about Marlborough, Wellington and Wairarapa during this time has been issued.
