Severe Weather Warning IDV28000 Severe Weather Warning for damaging winds for people in the North Central, North East, South West, Central, West and South Gippsland and East Gippsland forecast districts Issued at 3:32 pm EST on Tuesday 24 June 2014. Weather Situation The low pressure system has moved across Wilsons Promontory to eastern Bass Strait and has begun to weaken. The low is forecast to be just south of Gabo Island at 1800 hrs then weakening as it moves into the Tasman Sea. Gale force west to northwesterly winds will gradually ease this evening although elevated areas and the coastal fringe may remain at risk overnight. Blizzard conditions over Alpine areas are likely to ease this evening. Damaging winds around 60 km/h with peak gusts of 90 km/h are forecast for parts of the North Central, North East, South West, Central, West and South Gippsland and East Gippsland forecast districts. Winds averaging 70km/h with gusts to 120km/h are possible about Alpine areas until this evening. The Severe Weather Warning for the Wimmera forecast district and parts of the Mallee and Northern Country forecast districts has been cancelled, but the situation will continue to be monitored and further warnings will be issued if necessary. Wind gusts of 100-110 km/h have been recorded along the western and central coasts. Many elevated locations over central and western Victoria have recorded gusts in the order of 100-120km/h. The strongest gusts recorded include 128km/h at Cape Otway at 9:47am, 122km/h at South Channel Island at 10:32am, 120 km/h at both Cape Nelson at 5:55am and Mt William at 9:55am, 115 km/h at Eildon Weir at 1:23 pm and 113 km/h at both Ben Nevis at 9:59am and Fawkner Beacon at 11:12 am. The State Emergency Service advises that people should: Move vehicles under cover or away from trees. Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony. Keep clear of fallen power lines. Dont drive, ride or walk through flood water. Keep clear of creeks and storm drains. Beware of fallen trees or debris on the road. For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500. The next warning will be issued by 11:00 pm EST Tuesday. This warning is also available through TV and Radio broadcasts; the Bureaus website at bom.gov.au or call 1300-659-217*. The Bureau and State Emergency Service would appreciate this warning being broadcast regularly.
