Severe weather notes I hope will explain what may or may not - TopicsExpress

Severe weather notes I hope will explain what may or may not happen today and tomorrow: *This is NOT a polar vortex induced event. I explained why a few times over the weekend/last week, despite how chilly the air mass is behind the cold front. *A Derecho is a real thing, existed for many years, but that term has been overused since our 2012 event. It could happen, but most severe storms do not qualify as that. See more definitions here : examiner/article/severe-storm-definitions *A Watch means it is possible. This covers a large area and many hours. But not a guarantee. *A Warning means it is happening now. Often a county or two listed with towns in the path. This usually covers 30-60 minutes time frame. *Severe Thunderstorms are classified by winds over 58 mph (rounded to 60), large hail over 1 diameter/quarter size. *Damaging winds and smaller hail can be possible in non severe storms. *Lightning can be deadly in any thunderstorm. *Tornadoes are funnel clouds touching the ground. *Straight line winds can reach over 70 mph and do similar damage. They are more common than twisters. *Microbursts are cold air pockets than sink fast, can impact planes, and cause damage at the ground.
