Shabbat Shalom folk! Here is this weeks Parsha Notes from the Shabbat Study. In Parsha Vayera we see that Hashem does appear physically to Avraham Avinu. The Ramban stated that he entire encounter between Avraham and the three messengers took place in the physical realm. What is of interest is that in this Parsha with the Akeida we see that origin of the shofar and of the idea of Rosh Hoshana as the head of the year. You might have heard that Jews do not believe in a virgin birth, that the idea itself is pagan. However in the Zohar, Parsha Vayera we find a startling statement that hints at how a virgin birth is possible. Come and behold. Of the elder daughter, it is written: and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose (Ibid. 33). The phrase, when she arose is spelled with a Vav with a dot above it. This indicates that there was help from above in performing that action, which was to ultimately result in the birth of Mashiach. (Zohar Parsha Vayera, verse 310) Furthermore we find that Messiah will appear in Galilee as stated in the Zphar In the year 66, the King Mashiach will appear in the land of Galilee, AND HE IS CALLED MASHIACH BEN YOSEF (MESSIAH, THE SON OF YOSEF) HE WILL THEREFORE APPEAR IN THE GALILEE, IN THE POSSESSION OF YOSEF. This Parsha along with last weeks Parsha Lech Lecha gives us the answer why Rav Shaul uses Avraham Avinu in Romans to give us an example of Righteousness, Torah Observance based on Emunah (Faith) and becoming the first Jew or the first Consecrated one unto Hashem.
