Shahaadah of Hazrat Umar radhi Allaho anho on the 1st of Muharram On the 10th of Muharram, Hazrat Husain radhi Allaho anho, the noble and beloved grandson of Rasoolullah was tragically martyred in the plain of Karbala, but the Islamic year begins on the 1st of Muharram and with it brings a reminder that this is the day , another great personality , a beloved companion of the beloved prophet of Allah Hazrat Umar radhi Allaho had his wish of shahaadat fullfilled. He had this burning desire to die as a shaheed that he used to make this duaa, O Allah grant me shahaadah in your path and make my death (come to me ) in Madinah. On returning from his last Haj in 23 A.h he stopped at a place, looked up to the sky and prayed, O Allah! . I have grown old . My strength is giving way, my thoughts have become scattered. O Allah! take me away before things become worse. Once Umar r.a met Kab Ahbaar who was a scholar of the jewish scriptures and he said to him , O Ameerul - momineen! I have seen written in Tauraat that you will be martyred. Abu Lulu Feroz ,a persian slave of Mughira bin Shobah r.a, the governor of Kufah had a grudge with Umar r.a and threatened to kill him. One morning while Hazrat Umar was stepping forward to lead Fajar salaat, Abu Lulu stabbed him a number of times in the stomach. This caused severe bleeding leading to his Shahaadah on the 1st of Muharram 24 A.H. He sent a message to Aaisha radhi Allaho anha, requesting if he could be allowed to be burried next to his two friends, the beloved prophet of Allah sallallaho alaihe wasallam and Abu Bakr radi Allaho anho. Abdullah ibn Abbas radhi Allaho anhuma has narrated that, While Hazrat Umars body was lying , waiting to be buried, I felt some one put their hand on my shoulder and say , O Umar ! May Allah have mercy upon you. I hope Allah will unite you with your two friends, for on many occasions I had heard Rasoolullah sallallaho alaihe wasallam saying , I was and so were Abu Bakr and Umar, I did and so did Abu Bakr and Umar, I went and so did Abu Bakr and Umar, I entered and so did Abu Bakr and Umar , I went out and so did Abu Bakr and Umar,....when I (Ibn Abbaas) looked back , it was Ali ibn Abi Talib radhi Allaho anho. (Mishkaat from Bukhari). On another occasion, the prophet sallallaho alaihe wasallam said, I , Abu Bakr and Umar have been created from the same clay and will be buried therein. Once the prophet sallallaho alaihe wasallam was with Hazrat Abu Bakr on his right and Hazrat Umar on his left, and he (the prophet sallallaho alaihe wasallam) , put his hands on their shoulders and said, This is how we will rise on the day of Qiyamah. Inspite of the fact that Abu Lulu was a majoosi (fire worshipper) , the shias of Iran , out of their hatred for Umar radhi Allaho anho, have built and dedicated a shrine to him and praise him like a hero.
