Shakespeares Antony and Cleopatra is a tragedy of love par excellence. Its worth noting that George Bernard Shaws Caesar and Cleopatra is never an imitation of Shakespeares play! Rather, Shaws work is a comedy par excellence. In this context, in a comment on Shaws Caesar and Cleopatra I quote G. E. Brown as he writes: In Caesar and Cleopatra, written in 1898, George Bernard Shaw presents his typically unromantic view of the relationship between those two almost legendary figures with a dray humour that Show attributes to Julius Caesar. His Caesar is in reality a well-educated, urban member of the English middle class of the 1890s; there is almost no attempt to make him a credible historical figure. (Extract from George Bernard Shaw by G. E. Brown. London, 1970).
