Shaman drums are often referred to as the shaman’s “steed” in Mongolia . This is because the drum is used for journeying work to travel to the other worlds. Drums are also used to help theMongol shaman enter a state of ongod orood where they are merged with the spirits. The shape of the drum and decorations very from tribe to tribe and region to region. Common adornments are: the attachment of “jingle cones” to the inside of the drum, the painting of the drum head, and the attachment of ceremonial khatag scarves. The drum is believed to have it’s own spirit and is usually handled by only the shaman and his assistant. One of the main jobs of the shaman’s assistant is to warm the drum up by the fire....
