Shaming the obese? Let’s think this through. Obese people - TopicsExpress

Shaming the obese? Let’s think this through. Obese people have been humiliated, left out, targeted, paid less, and slighted for almost a century. With more people overweight than ever, do you think shame is working? When you see an overweight person fast walking in exercise clothing, do you applaud her or make an unkind remark? Can you imagine how difficult it is for an obese person to enter an exercise club? Humiliation makes people want to hide away. They are less likely to take a walk, join a club, go out in public--more likely to order food delivery or pick up fast food and eat at home in order to forestall some callous remark like, “Do you really need to eat?” People with extra weight are more likely to skip meals. They think starving is a good idea. They feel bad when they eat anything. This causes an increase in appetite-promoting chemicals in the brain, the worst possible course. Shame, therefore, creates a chain reaction that can result in lowered metabolism and increased appetite chemicals. If you truly care, learn what to do that can help. Otherwise, targeting the obese is just another type of scapegoating. amazon/gp/product/1598587137/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1598587137&linkCode=as2&tag=wwwannekather-20
