Shannon Murakami is by far the most decorated miler in Santa Clarita Valley history. In high school, she broke the five-minute barrier on 21 different occasions, set the 1,600-meter meet record at the Foothill League Championships in three consecutive years, running 4:50.59 in 2005, 4:47.99 in 2006, and 4:47.96 in 2007, and broke the Southern Section division one record two straight years, clocking 4:44.32 in the 2006 finals and a solo 4:42.50 in 2007. Murakami also won three Southern Section division one crowns in a row from 2005-07 and still has the greatest state prelims-finals double in event history, blazing the fastest time in the 2006 prelims (4:46.03), then returning the next day to earn a bronze medal in the deepest 1,600-meter race in state history (4:43.04). Today, the former Saugus legend still holds the Foothill League championship record at 4:47.96, the Southern Section division one record at 4:42.50, the SCV sophomore record at 4:50.59, the SCV junior record at 4:43.04, and the SCV senior record at 4:42.50. In 2014, Murakami also clocked a personal best of 4:16.73 over 1,500 meters, which converts to 4:35.60 in the mile. How great is Murakami at the mile? Well, she had no problem averaging sub-five minutes in a 4xmile workout during last spring. When it comes to the mile, no one compares. --Updated SCV Womens 1,600m All-Time List and former Foothill League, Southern Section, CIF SS Masters and state champions included: brandosblog.weebly/1600-meters1.html
