With the tide out, he had few options, so set a course that took the fleet to Gerston before returning to the harbour for a couple of rounds using an “X” mark that spared the fleet from being swept out to sea at Blackstone. The first fleet away was the Slow Handicap fleet, despite several boats getting stuck in no wind under Ditch End, Clare Booth once again emerged victorious in her Streaker, with Sam Lloyd second in his Laser Radial, and Roger Pannell securing third place in his Dayboat. Special mention should be made of Evie Booth sailing an RS Tera in the Cadet Handicap Fleet who sailed an intelligent course and made impressive progress against the tide in her RS Tera Sport to take the another first place for the Booth family. In the Fast Handicap, Peter Ballantine and Theo Harris notched up their fourth bullet of the series in their National 12 “Dead Cat Bounce”, with Norman and Karen Brown in another twelve following them home. Theo’s dad, Keri took third place in the Navy Lark. The wind had all but disappeared for the Solo start, and several competitors chose a standing start off the beach, rather than get swept away from the start line on the tide. Old hands, Simon Gibbens and Bill Jago led the initial tacking match up the Portlemouth shore, with William Warren, Peter Colclough and Harold Cranch in pursuit. Simon and Bill had a close race with Simon eventually having the upper hand upon their return to the harbour, Peter Colclough and William Warren took the next places following a rookie error by Harold Cranch resulted in the only capsize of the afternoon. Some of the Yawls approach to the light wind start was to be uptide prior to the start and to dip the line at the starting gun, this relies on good timing, which some boats failed to achieve. Graham and Tessa Pike led off the start line and were never to be headed, however Ian and Wendy Stewart, making a welcome appearance, closed the gap to make a competitive finish, with the old hands Gilson and Spencer-Chapman taking third place.
