Shared: Spaniel Rescue South Africa SUPPORTERS - PLEASE BEWARE! SHARE THIS WITH YOUR FRIENDS, FAMILY AND NEIGBHOURS WHO HAVE DOGS! The silly season is almost upon us - crime is on the rise and so is the theft of dogs - especially HIGH RISK DOGS like Pit Bull, Boerboels, Boxers, Bull Terriers, Huskies - and any cute puppy or small dog! If you are not going to be at home, KEEP YOUR ANIMALS IN YOUR HOUSE! It is much easier to clean up any mess than to have to go through the agony of your dog being stolen. The time now is to be vigilant and to protect your dogs from becoming the victims of theft and possibly being used in dog fights. Make sure your dogs are out of sight of the road when you are not at home. If you can lift the height of your fence, then do that by all means. Ensure that your gates cannot be opened just by anyone. If you have a puppy - NEVER LET IT PLAY BY ITSELF OUTSIDE! Just like you would never leave a 2 year old child to play outside unattended - the same goes for your puppy! Anyone can walk off with your puppy without being noticed - bergies put them in a trolley and off they go! Or they stick them in a shopping bag and walk off with them. Get your dogs chipped and ID tagged - yes the thief can remove the tag but the chips cannot - and should your pet be so unfortunate as to have been stolen, if the buyer takes him to the vet they can find you via the chip. DO NOT LEAVE IT TOO LATE! Make sure that your yard is secure before leaving any of your pets alone at home. Even pedigreed cats are targets to make sure your kitty cannot escape while you are not at home. Siamese and other exotic species of cats are increasingly being stolen. SHOULD YOUR DOG BE STOLEN YOU NEED TO ACT IMMEDIATELY! First things first: Get posters up in the area as soon as you can - get someone to help you put them up - post them at your main exits and entrances, at your local shops and shopping malls, have flyers printed and stick it under the windshields of cars in large parking spaces - you never know who might have seen something and CHANCES ARE THAT YOUR DOG WAS TAKEN TO BE RESOLD ON THE STREET A FEW BLOCKS AWAY! Alert your local vets and shelters (especially the SPCA) and report your dog as being stolen to your local police. YOU NEED TO ACT RIGHT AWAY! Prevention is always better than cure though so take the necessary steps to ensure the safety of your dogs! NOW!!!! Ask your neighbours to be alert and on the look out for suspicious looking characters in your area. There are reports of youths walking in groups and scouting out homes - should you see any of these groups that obviously do not belong in the area - immediately alert the police! Keep an eye on bergie people who come in to the area on bin days - call the police or neighbourhood patrol if necessary! It is time for us as people to stand together against the theft of our animals - we can only do that if we get to know our neighbours and watch out for one another.
