Shariah Appeal Court Saves Two Suspects from Amputation The Shariah Court of Appeal in Sokoto, Monday set aside the judgment of the Upper Shariah Court 2, which ordered the amputation of the hands of two suspects who had been incarcerated for three years for allegedly stealing N10,000. The judgment was sequel to the appeal filed by a human rights activist, Malam Kabir Dodo of the Office of the Special Adviser to the State Governor on Human Rights and Donor Agencies, asking the Shariah Court of Appeal to dismiss the verdict of the Upper Shariah Court 2, which had ordered the amputation of the hands of the two suspects. It is remarkable that they had spent three years in custody while the trial lasted, all for stealing N10,000, he said. The Upper Shariah Court 2 Sokoto, presided over by Qadi Dan Tsafe, had in 2010 ruled that the right wrists of Nasiru Abubakar and Anas Mohammed, both commercial drivers, be amputated for allegedly stealing N10,000 belonging to a passenger while on their way from Shagari Local Government Area to Tambuwal council. Since 2010, the two convicts had remained in prison custody with their hands un-amputated but did not appeal the judgment because they were unaware that they could appeal the judgment within 30 days at the time. In the judgment delivered by the Presiding Judge, Qadi Dahiru Danjega, he ordered the immediate discharge and acquittal of the two accused persons.
