Sharing: Thanks Poppo Olag. I remember this song as I learnt it for the first time in the language of Kaiser Wilhelm and how it came into being as a German language student at the University of the Philippines during my Junior year. Here is the song in German with lyrics. The lyrics of this immortal song are indeed beautiful. https://youtube/watch?v=TuyroRHlcBE Then one evening, I joined my classmate to sing Christmas carol and in particular the home of our German professor at the UP village in Diliman, Quezon City. And of course we sang STILLE NACHT, HEILIGE NACHT. Our professor and his wife were definitely amused and delighted and gave us one peso which at that time was a big money as we normally get cinco centavos when we did Christmas carol. I had to go from my home to Diliman at night and had to get someone to give me a ride home as public transportation did not operate late at night. So I invited a friend with a car to take me to the UP village where my German professor lived. Let me say seasons greetings in the language of Kaiser Wilhelm. Frohe Weihnachten und Glückliches Neues Jahr ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: poppoolag Date: Tue, Dec 23, 2014 at 3:19 PM Subject: SILENT NIGHT To: poppoolag We often hum, mumble and sing one of the most popular and memorable Christmas Song ever written: “Silent Night.” But do you know when this song was born? Maybe some of you know, but most are not likely. It begun in 1818 written as a poem by a clergy, Joseph Mohr in an Alpine village of Oberndorf in Austria, first wrote “Stille Nacht”. On Christmas Eve two years later, St. Nicholas Chapel, Oberndorf, Austria Mohr, who had become the new assistant pastor at St. Nicholas Chapel in Oberndorf, Franz Xaver Gruber asked organist Franz Xaver Gruber to help set his poem to music. Working all day on the song, the two sang “Silent Night” for the congregation that night at mass. Years later, Karl Mauracher, an organ builder who was visiting the Church, found the song and passed it along to the Rainer and Strasser families, folksingers who performed throughout Europe. Twenty years after Silent Night was written, the Rainers brought the song to the United States, singing it (in German) at the Alexander Hamilton Monument located outside New York Citys Trinity Church. Today, almost 200 years later, “Silent Night” has been translated into 300 languages and is regarded as the world’s most widely sung Christmas Song. The best gifts of all around Christmas are a happy family all wrapped up in each other.
