Sharing in on a Tuesday that feels like a Wednesday! ;D How do you measure success? Man A works as a sales director in a MNC, earning $25,000 monthly. Man B works as a kitchen assistant in a restaurant, earning $1,400 monthly. Student A studies in a prestigious secondary school, scoring As for all his subjects. Student B studies in a neghbourhood school, and would most likely have to repeat his secondary three examinations or be expelled. Man As son is Student A. Man Bs son is Student B. Now, answer honestly: Up till this point, if you had a choice, who would you rather be? Its perfectly reasonable if Family A is being selected. On the surface, theyre a better choice: Good household income, good results and most likely, respect from others. Everything is perfect? Not so. Do you have friends who are wealthy? Are they successful and happy? Ive read a book, and what it says is very true: Wealth doesnt bring you happiness. It merely provides you with more options. If so, what brings happiness; the true measurement of success? I’d love to answer that, but no, if I know the answer, then the answer is not accurate. Sometimes, I believe that true success is measured subjectively. For example, I measure success by the number of people reading my novels. My friend, who likes teaching, measures success by the number of students who appreciated her teaching. Of course, there would be friends who measure success by the amount of cash in their bank accounts. Thats fine—my argument is just that NOT everyone measures this way. Therefore, it might not be correct to think that everyone measures success the same way. However, society might have embedded that mindset into us. Think of the answer youve made just now. Judgement is made quickly. What if I tell you that Family B loves running, and has run many marathons? Their flat is decorated with so many medals that once you step in, youll feel their fitness. They, as a family, run every day. So, now, comparing Family A and B, which one has succeeded more? While you can argue that we must be practical, we must also remember that practical means enough to survive. Anything beyond that is passion. If one is okay with a Casio instead of a Rolex, the measure of a man should not be fixated by what is seen on the surface. What do you think?
