Sharing this because I offered legitimate concern in a civil manner and they just deleted the comments. They deleted other constructive comments of concern from other Service Dog handlers. This Service Dog Program KNEW the dog was unsound before they trained it. The dog received surgery, and two years later they are asking the public to give MORE money to work an unsound dog in pain. The facts are: once repaired, a joint is NEVER the same. THere is always pain. Dogs are stoic and may not always display pain levels. Its a survival technique. Working an unsound dog is INHUMANE, and UNETHICAL to give unreliable medical equipment to a disabled individual. Here is my original, now deleted, comment: Im sorry, but I need to share my thoughts and feelings. It may get me banned and deleted, but oh well. I have no doubt this dog is very special and has helped her owner greatly. But there many healthy sound dogs out there that are capable of being trained to do the same work. I myself use a Service Dog. I am in a wheelchair part-time (for possible MS). Service Dogs are elite athletes. The demands on them physically and emotionally are great. I think it incredibly irresponsible and inhumane to KNOW a dog has issues with their elbows, and STILL training it for this work. You chose to give someone unreliable medical equipment. That should be unethical, to be perfectly frank. And now, because of that decision, you are asking other people ot pay for a SECOND surgery? Just to put structurally unreliable medical equipment back out there. Medical equipment that might break AGAIN? That is just WRONG! I understand there is a magical bond and everything, but one needs to separate emotional involvement when dealing with the needs of someone disabled. They deserve reliable, sturdy medical equipment. This dog should be rewarded for her work with a pampered retirement, and a dog more capable to keep up with this type of work should be trained in its place. THAT I would donate to, but not for what you are asking here.
