Sharing this on a Sunday (oh, a few more hours to Monday...)! Singaporeans judge. Like it or not, its a fact. Im in a private university. One day, during a beta reading session, a readers friend tagged along. To cut long story short, the friend, who apparently is an undergraduate in a public university, verbally attacked me. She is an aspiring writer, and when I argued based on my experience in writing, guess what she said? Youre just in a private university. What has it got to do with my—wait, never mind. Shes judged even before she saw me. Its not like shes an established writer, anyway. Ive another friend who made fun (and it was not funny—it was obvious that he was looking down at me) at my car, a very low-end car. He himself is driving a continental one, though I believe that…its his parents. Then, theres another friend who is always focusing on what I wear. He never judges explicitly, but as we all know, we feel that were judged through tone and body language, not words. Hes just wasting his money on high-end fashion, and he looks bad in them. And guess what? These friends—they judge everyone. And the worst part? I judge them, too. Note my last sentence in the last three paragraphs. While its easy to say that we don’t judge, we all do. Singapore has become so developed that necessities is no longer a priority; its the need to show others that youre better that is more important. Think about a day in school or work. How many times were you judged? How many times did you judge others? The young punk driving a Mercs is driving his parents car. That singer who branches out to Taiwan buys his way into the new market. Your friend who passes his examinations is just lucky. I do not have the solution to this, but I guess what we need to do is simple: since we need to judge every day, why not judge ourselves instead? Its easier, it’s more accurate and it fulfils the desire in us. I dont know about you, but this is working for me. I feel that Im improving every day; because every day, I find something bad about me. So, dont judge me. Im doing the judging myself, thanks. What do you think?
