Shari’s Words of Wisdom: Has it ever happened to you that you ate something ‘healthy’, yet you kept looking in your kitchen, searching the cupboards for something else to eat? Have you ever asked yourself why? Could it be that maybe you weren’t really satisfied with your meal? Were you bored with what you were eating? Did it lack texture or taste? I know, we are all creatures of habit and tend to eat and do what we know, but maybe it’s time to re-evaluate just what you are putting into your meal and what you are leaving out! Food should taste good and everyone should enjoy what they eat. To get real satisfaction from what we eat, we want to make sure that the whole combination of the taste palette is covered. The key is to obtain balance and to do that your ‘dish’ should contain the following tastes: Sweet – for example: maple syrup, agave, fruit, coconut sugar, honey, molasses Salty- celery is a natural source of salt, but you can get it from tamari, miso, sea vegetables, Himalayan salt Bitter- kale, cumin, nutmeg, collards, dandelion greens, dark leafy greens Umami- savory flavors like lemon, lime, vinegar, sauerkraut, tomatoes Pungent/Spicy – chili peppers, garlic, ginger, onions These are just a few examples, but when you add these flavors in your meal, you will definitely feel satisfied! So think about the next time you make a soup, salad, a stir fry or a chicken dish, don’t be afraid of adding a little extra ingredients to it! Your tummy will thank you! Here’s a salad dressing to get you started! Ginger Tamari Vinaigrette 1/2 cup olive oil 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar 2 Tbsp. agave (honey or maple syrup) 1 Tbsp. sesame oil 1 Tbsp. tamari 2 Tbsp. fresh ginger, grated Place all ingredients into your blend and blend until smooth.
