Shark Attack… It’s the day before New Year’s Eve, and I - TopicsExpress

Shark Attack… It’s the day before New Year’s Eve, and I find myself compelled to write a little about gratitude and the precious gift of life. It’s not a subject that you might typically find on an investment firm’s blog. However, as many of you may already know, our business partner, Kevin Swanson is an avid surfer. He was enjoying some personal time over the holidays this last weekend and was out surfing just south of Morro Bay with some friends. As he describes it, the sun was out on a cool December day, and the waves were good…it was time for him to enjoy life. Unfortunately for Kevin, a great white shark had other plans for him. At about 11:30 am, while Kevin was out past the break sitting up on his board, this shark came up from the depths, unannounced and grabbed ahold of his upper leg and his surf board and drug him under. Fortunately for Kevin and all of us that love him, the shark let go and he was able to get to shore. By another stroke of luck a couple doctors happened to be there that day and were able to get him some immediate medical attention. The coast guard was called and he was flown by Helicopter to the local hospital where they performed some surgery to put all the wounds back together. Kevin is expected to make a full recovery. And believe it or not, he’s already talking about getting back out in the water again. Now this story by itself is pretty remarkable, but for me, it highlights a few important themes. Life is meant to be lived. One of the benefits of working with Kevin is that he’s a great reminder of that notion. He works hard and plays hard. He truly enjoys his time with his family and spending time doing the things he loves. Kevin turned 50 this year, and he’s in great shape enjoying all that life has to offer. I’m only a few years behind him, but he’s a great mentor to me in this area, and a good reminder to all of us to make sure we take time to enjoy the time we have. The work we do helping our clients with their investments is important, but investments (or money) is only a conduit to “stuff”. It does provide for comforts and security, but it really has no impact on one’s ability to have great, personal loving relationships with the people that are important to them. A close encounter with death by someone you love is a great wakeup call to remind us of this. I know the hugs will get a little tighter and a little longer at my house this week. Happy New Year to all, and may your 2015 be prosperous and full of LIFE!
